Determine The Worth of Your Hobby Business

“Purposefully choosing to spend time on your own wants and desires is not only a basic wellness need but can in turn be hugely empowering. I used to be shy and embarrassed when anyone would compliment my projects. I felt like I didn't deserve to be praised since I wasn't formally trained and don't always know how I successfully made anything! I felt like I was floating in a hobby business limbo with no clear answers.

The truth is, NO ONE has ever asked me what process, tools or wood species used for my pieces. I’m proud that I’m self-taught because the practice it takes is intensive. My skills were born from all of my best blood, sweat & tears and it shows in my work. I love making all things beautiful - affordably - and you can to! I didn't know what I was doing at first either but learning to work with my hands has been the best self-care I've ever been able to commit to!

The point is, you must allow people to admire your work. Allow yourself to be complimented and fairly compensated. It’s ok to feel uncomfortable about the sales part of your hobby business. The reason is because we aren’t business sleuths. We’re creatives. We have a love for our craftsmanship and the individual works of art that come from it. Be honourable, market adjascent and transparent. Some potential customers might not understand the value, but be diligent and your people will come.”

Never use tools without being properly shown how to start, stop and emergency stop each one. Knowing these things is essential for the safe use of any and all power tools that you attempt to use. And, if you still can, have fun and enjoy your next woodshop project!
